A couple of years ago, I experimented with writing television treatments just for fun…and sent my first treatment to the U.S. Copyright Office and the Writers’ Guild to safeguard it and get it out there! “Ladies of the Canyon,” a spin-off of “Daisy Jones & The Six,” is revised and can be positioned as a sequel focusing on the next generation of industry pioneers or be transformed into its own original story with a few changes. The most updated version of the treatment, from 2026, features a disclaimer and more in-depth details about what happened to the 70s juggernaut and how it informed the careers of the generation that followed, from Julia Dunne’s talents to Simone Jackson’s determination to stay relevant, and their friends’ efforts to be heard.

The potential series is more connected with the 2023 original series than the book. The story picks up in 1998, catalyzed when Billy Dunne submits his daughter Julia Dunne’s documentary about “DJATS” to a VH1-type channel, which picks it up for broadcast during that year’s July 4th weekend. Fan-favorite characters like Simone Jackson and Julia Dunne are broadened. We meet other people in their orbit who find opportunities and interesting relationships when a new generation is turned on to DJATS, pushing the story forward: Simone and Bernie return to L.A. to set up a West Coast “Haven” nightclub, and Simone reconnects with her favorite niece, Olivia (an aspiring DJ and recording engineer), in the process. Julia and her GenX and Millennial friends/peers are working behind the scenes of the ensuing reunion tour, getting looped into the glamour and chaos of the rapidly changing music, television, publishing, and tech industries in the thick of the Y2K years. Later in the series, Julia’s musically talented daughter forms her own groundbreaking all-female band.
